Hanoverian: the German warmblood in show jumping
Published on 2026-06-11
The Hanoverian (Hannoveraner) is one of the most widespread and successful German warmbloods. Here is an essential overview.
Origins
A breed from Lower Saxony: in 1735 George II founded the State Stud at Celle; the first studbook was published in 1888 [1]. Today breeding is led by the Hannoveraner Verband, based in Verden [1][2].
In show jumping
The Hanoverian studbook has for years been consistently among the world's best in show jumping in the WBFSH/FEI rankings; a dedicated programme (since 1993) aims to improve the production of jumpers [1].
