Show jumping competition formats: time, two phases and jump-off
Published on 2026-06-11
In show jumping, not all classes work the same way. Here are the main formats under the FEI rules.
Table A
The most common format: penalties are counted (knockdowns, refusals, time). It can be run against the clock (the fastest clear wins) or not against the clock [1][2].
Table C (speed)
Scoring is based on speed: each knockdown adds seconds to the time, and the lowest time wins [1][2].
Two-phase classes
A course split into two parts («power» and «speed»): a clear first phase continues straight into a faster second phase [1].
Jump-off (barrage)
When included, combinations clear in the first round return for a shorter course against the clock: fewest penalties wins and, if tied, time decides [1][2].
