How a show jumping competition is structured

Published on 2026-06-11

A show jumping competition follows a precise structure. Here are the main elements.

Categories and course

Classes are divided into categories by height; for each, a course of obstacles is set, which combinations tackle in the established order. Before the class, riders walk the course on foot [1][2].

Judges, clock and penalties

The judges score the round applying the penalties (knockdowns, refusals) and, where applicable, time. The competition format determines how the standings are drawn up [1].

Standings

Depending on the format, the winner is the one with the fewest penalties (and possibly the best time) or, in speed classes, the lowest time [1][2].
